Four ways to make a full-canvas print (and what each one costs you)

There is no single correct way to make artwork for an all-over garment.

Painters worked in oil, then illustrators moved to tablets, then everyone moved into software, and each shift came with somebody insisting the new tool didn't count. It never held. A tool has never made a design good, and it has never made one bad — the responsibility for what comes out sits with the person who made it, whichever route they took.

So: four common routes, each good at something and bad at something else. Below is what actually happens with each on our production line, so you can pick the one that matches how you work rather than the one a tutorial told you about.

1. Drawing and painting digitally

You draw the whole thing — Procreate, Photoshop, Clip Studio, anything with a brush.

Good at: originality that nobody can reproduce, and marks that look like a human made them. Full-canvas is unusually kind to painterly work, because there is no white margin to make your brushwork look like a sticker.

Bad at: scale discipline. A drawing made to be looked at on a tablet often becomes a garment with one enormous face on it. Zoom out to 20% while you work and ask whether it still reads as a piece of clothing.

Watch for: canvas size. Painting at print resolution is heavy but painting small and upscaling is worse — brush texture turns to mush. Start big.

2. Vector and pattern software

Illustrator, Affinity, Inkscape, Figma for flat work; dedicated pattern tools for repeats.

Good at: repeats, geometry, crisp edges at any size. Vector scales to a kids' tee and an oversized adult tee without any decisions from you. If you want to build a coherent series — twelve variations of one idea — this is the fastest route.

Bad at: looking handmade. Flat vector reads as cheap when it is generic, because the market is flooded with it. It reads as design when the palette and rhythm are yours.

Watch for: thin strokes and tiny gaps. Cotton has a weave; a 0.3 pt line that looks elegant on screen may not survive as a distinct line on fabric.

3. Generative tools

Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, Nano Banana, whatever you use.

Good at: volume, and at textures nobody has the patience to paint — dense floral fields, cosmic gradients, maximalist collage. Exactly the material that dies on a chest print and comes alive across a whole garment.

Bad at: intent. Generators produce plausible images, and plausible is not the same as designed. The difference between a print that sells and one that sits is usually a decision the model didn't make: a palette held to five colours, a motif repeated with rhythm, a background that isn't visual noise.

Watch for two specific traps.

Legal: a model will hand you someone else's character, logo or face from an innocent prompt. "Cute cartoon mouse in red shorts" is Mickey Mouse regardless of what you typed. Check the output, not the prompt.

Technical: generated images arrive at whatever size the tool feels like, often with soft edges and compression artefacts. Upscaling helps; upscaling a small, soft image to a large, soft image does not. If the detail isn't there, it isn't there.

4. Photography and collage

Your own photographs, scans, textures, cut-out shapes.

Good at: immediate difference. In a category dominated by illustration, a real photographic texture — actual fabric, actual leaves, actual film grain — looks unlike everything around it.

Bad at: rights. Every element must be yours or licensed for commercial print. Stock "free for personal use" is not enough, and Pinterest is not a source.

Watch for: colour. Photographs carry colour casts that read as mistakes once they cover a whole garment. Decide whether the cast is the point or the problem.

Whichever route you take

The production process is the same, and so is the short list that matters:

  • Work in RGB, at the largest size your route supports.
  • Look at your design at 20% zoom and at arm's length from the screen. That is roughly how a customer sees it.
  • Assume any part of it may be cut by a seam.
  • Assume the white areas are the fabric, not paint.

The rest — how you got there — is nobody's business but yours.
